ARB Safari Snorkel

By Topher

Ever been that last vehicle of a convoy stuck eating all the dust and dirt?  Or had to do a river crossing and when you leave the embankment your vehicle nose dives in the water?  Then you need a snorkel.  As you may or may not know I have a bit of an ARB addiction.  So naturally I decided on the ARB Safari Snorkel and my Tacoma’s motor has certainly thanked me for it.  The Safari Snorkel relocates your engine’s air intake from a low, vulnerable position under the hood to a much higher and safer location where cleaner, dryer air is available.

The installation is fairly straight forward and should only take the average person a couple of hours.  Which is why it took me about half the day!  I have to admit, I was terrified to drill a large hole in the side of my 2013 Tacoma that is still under warranty, but I took the dive and I did it!  Just remember the old adage to measure three times and cut once or in my case twice…  The rest of the install went smoothly except for getting to the back of the bolts that secure the snorkel body to the fender.  The person who wrote the installation instructions must have been double jointed or had very small hands!  After several failed attempts and a few choice words I curdled up in a ball with a frosty beverage in defeat enlisted the help of my flexible and small wife to reach up in the fender well and get to those two ******* bolts.

Did I actually need this piece of gear for my truck, that’s debatable?  But holy moly… does it look good!  As an added benefit of it being a ram air I did notice a slight increase of about 1 MPG although it did not last long.  One important note, be ready for the on slot of stoplight conversations and folks asking how far underwater it will go.

Facts from ARB themselves:

  • The snorkels are completely an Australian design and feature:

  • Durable, UV stable crosslinked polyethylene

  • High flow air ducting and body

  • Comprehensive kit, including stainless steel and plated hardware

  • Unique air ram design that acts as a water separator to remove rain water
