Mother's Day Camping Trip

As one last trip before I start school, Topher took off 2 days of work to have an extended Mother’s Day weekend.  We also wanted to do a trip just van camping to see how we liked in it the minivan.  We had planned to do a big loop in Wisconsin starting at Goose Island campground, stopping at the Leinenkugle brewery, head up to Apostle Islands National Shoreline and then work our way back down staying at rib Mountain State Park.  Unfortunately, only half of the trip happened because Kaylee and I were both sick and just felt miserable.

We left home Friday afternoon when Topher got off work and I was done with Kaylee’s therapy appointment.  We drove straight over to Goose Island campground.  We really liked the simplicity of setting up camp, by just unrolling the awning and folding down the back seats of the van to let our Exped Duo Mat self-inflate.  The mat was just a little too wide for the space but it worked out fine.  After camp was set up, we took a walk around the campground and then made some meatball sandwiches before Kaylee got fussy and was ready for bed.  We tucked inside the van, put on our pjs, and cuddled up for the night.  We did have an electric site and just ran an extension cord out beneath the back hatch to have a heater in there.  It was nice and cozy.

The next morning, we cooked up an egg scramble for breakfast, packed up like a breeze, stopped by the shower house for showers before pushing our way up to the Leinenkugle brewery.  We stopped at a few waterfalls and the Autumn Harvest Winery and Orchard in Chippewa Falls before the brewery.  Wine for me and beer for him. Leinenkugle’s has delicious beer, a great tour, and nice gift shop if you ever get a chance to stop in.  After the brewery tour, we headed to camp for the night which was Brunet Island State Park.  Feeling exhausted and worse as the trip kept going, we decided the next day we would head back home to the comfort of our bed.

Sunday morning we stopped in Norske Nook, a Norwegian bakery for breakfast.  They are known for their award-winning pies and every mother got a free slice for Mother’s day.
